The 3 Filters in Your Car That You Need to Change Regularly
We understand that many of our customers aren’t car people by nature. You know that you need to bring your car in for maintenance regularly, but you may not know why. One of the reasons you need to bring your car in is to make sure that your filters are clean and clear. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is. Over time, all of your car’s filters can become clogged with debris, which means they stop doing their jobs. Here’s some information about the three filters you need to make sure get changed on a regular basis to keep your car running smoothly.
Engine Air Filter
Your engine air filter helps to keep bugs, pollen, dust, and debris out of your engine. This is important because your engine needs to run as cleanly as possible. If you don’t get your air filter replaced, it means your engine may start to run choppy, which wastes gas. Every car is different, but in general, your filter needs to be replaced between 15,000 and 45,000 miles. On average, you need to have the air filter replaced every 30,000 miles. A good service center will check your filter every time you have maintenance done on your car. If you find that your mechanic says you need to change your filter every time you get your oil changed, you need a second opinion.
Cabin Air Filter
You may not think about it, but the reason your interior car air smells nice is because of your cabin air filter. This filter cleans the air coming into your car from the heating and cooling system. Usually, this filter also needs to be replaced every 15,000 miles or so as well. However, sometimes your filter may need to be replaced earlier. If you notice your air rattles when you turn it on, or you smell an unpleasant odor coming from your vents, it may be time to change it. Also, be sure that your windows aren’t fogging on the inside, which is another signal you may have a problem. When your air filter is working properly, you should have enough airflow not to have foggy windows.
Oil Filters
Another important filter for your car is the oil filter. Your oil filter keeps dirt, debris and other impurities out of your lubricating engine oil. You really need to have clean oil for your car to run the right way. A good rule of thumb is that every time your oil is changed, your oil filter is checked and changed if necessary–which means that your filter is changed between every 5000 and 7500 miles.
