The COVID-19 pandemic means that many of us are staying home a lot and not driving nearly as much as we used to. Leaving your car sitting in one place for a long time can cause a lot of damage to your tires. If you haven’t heard what happens to tires that sit too long, here’s some information you might find useful from the experts at Car Care Connection.

When Tires Sit Too Long

When your car has been in the same position for a long period of time, you might notice some changes to your car tires. First, your tires can begin to deflate. They may change color, and look flatter and warped. Depending on how long your tires have been sitting out, they might also begin to look discolored or rotted. When you begin driving again, and inflate your tires, you might notice they don’t inflate the right way, or you may hear air hissing out of your tires.

Your tires that have been sitting awhile can also form bubbles under the surface of the tire, where they are not visible. Bubbles are a big problem as far as your tires are concerned. If you drive on them, they can cause a blowout, which can cause damage to your car.

Your tires might also develop flat spots. When a car tire has been sitting too long, it can become rigid. This rigidness, called flat spots, makes your tires rough and bumpy–which makes for a rough and bumpy ride. Once that flat spot happens, the tire will never work the way it was supposed to originally.
